At The Dock Ministries, transformation often happens in simple, faithful moments. One of those moments takes place each week at our Refuel Station, gathered around a table with a Bible verse, a candy bar, and a volunteer named Chuck.
Chuck has faithfully served at The Dock for many years. Each week, during Refuel Station, he takes his place as our beloved “Bible Man.” Students know exactly where to find him. They come one by one, sometimes shy, sometimes confident, sometimes giggling with friends, ready to recite the Bible verse they’ve been given. If they can say it from memory, they receive a candy bar.
But what happens next is what makes this moment truly meaningful.
Chuck doesn’t simply listen for correct words and hand out candy. He leans in. He asks questions. He gently explains what the verse means. In clear, calm language, he helps students understand not just what the words say, but why they matter. He connects Scripture to real life, to friendships, family struggles, school pressures, and personal choices.
For many of our students, these are not just memory exercises. They are some of the few times in their week when an adult slows down, listens carefully, and speaks truth over them.
The photo we are sharing captures one of these moments. Chuck sits across from two students at a Refuel Station table. A basket of candy bars rests between them, but the focus is not on the candy. It is on conversation. It is on Scripture. It is on relationship.
Our Refuel Station serves a hot meal to students each week, addressing physical hunger. Yet through volunteers like Chuck, we are also feeding spiritual hunger. Students who may never open a Bible on their own are hiding God’s Word in their hearts. They are learning that Scripture is not distant or complicated, but practical and personal.
Because of the faithful support of Classis Grand Rapids South, ministries like this continue week after week. Your partnership allows us to create consistent, safe spaces where students experience nourishment for body, mind, and soul.
Chuck’s role may seem small to some: listen to a verse, give a candy bar. But in reality, he is planting seeds of faith. Seeds that may grow for years to come.
Thank you for helping make these moments possible. Through your generosity, students at The Dock are not only being fed; they are being formed.
