The Power of Encouragement and Quiet Commitment
Evan is a quiet, reserved young man of few words and few financial resources. He surprised us at the end of this semester by quietly coming up and proudly showing Jacky, our Dir of Operations, his GED certificate. He excitedly told her, “I didn’t think I could do it, but I got my GED. Thank you for encouraging me, for telling me I could do it. That’s why I tried.”
We had no idea. He told no one about his GED studies because he didn’t want to feel the shame if he failed. So, this semester Evan has been working construction full time, coming faithfully to ESL classes twice a week, and studying to pass his GED exam. He’s my hero.
So, to all the churches of Classis Grand Rapids South, to the individuals who show they care by supporting the many missions endeavors with your financial gifts, to the pastors, ministers, and support teams – thank you. You also are my heroes. Together we are providing a community of Christian caring and support for our neighbors from Roosevelt Park, Burton Heights and surrounding areas. But it goes way beyond learning English or finding a house or a job. Evan’s humble dedication and strong work ethic, now coupled with a GED and increasing fluency in English, can open doors of flourishing that will ripple to all his future generations.
Your support and partnership allows us to change a person’s whole life trajectory for the better, and we do it all in the name and for the sake of Jesus.
