Rock the Dock: Building Relationships Through Fun

One of the highlights of this past quarter was our annual Rock the Dock event held in May. What began years ago as a simple celebration has grown into one of our biggest opportunities to connect with students and kick off the start of summer vacation. This year was our largest Rock the Dock yet!

Students enjoyed a variety of activities including 9-Square, a piñata, cookie walks, music, prizes, games, and plenty of pizza and frozen treats. We served more than 160 slices of pizza and 200 frozen treats in just 30 minutes! However, the greatest reward was seeing so many students laughing together, making new friends, and building relationships with our staff and volunteers.

One of the biggest highlights was our “Pie in the Face” competition. Throughout the event, students voted for the staff member they most wanted to see receive a whipped cream pie. When the votes were counted, Dock Director, Craig Van Hill, and Program Associate, Hayley Richmond, claimed the top two spots! The laughter and cheers as they willingly took pies to the face created a memorable moment that perfectly reflects the heart of The Dock. Our staff is willing to do just about anything to make students feel welcomed, valued, and loved.

While Rock the Dock is full of fun and excitement, its true purpose is much deeper. Events like this create opportunities to build trust with students, learn their stories, and invite them into ongoing relationships through our weekly programs. We were especially encouraged by the number of new students who attended this year. Many had never been to The Dock before but left asking about our summer activities and when they could return.

Because of the faithful support of Classis South, The Dock is able to offer events like Rock the Dock free of charge. Removing financial barriers allows every student to participate, regardless of their family’s circumstances. Your partnership is helping us create a place where students experience not only fun and friendship, but also the unconditional love and hope found in Jesus Christ. Thank you for investing in this ministry and in the lives of the students we serve.
