An interview with Cameron Martin –

Cameron is a senior at GVSU who hails from Rockford Michigan. He loves sports, hunting, eating any meat produce and serving as a leader for the Lord. Cam’s major is secondary education – Social Studies. He is awesome and here is his story in CM

Cam: I have been involved with campus ministry since 2019. In those three years I have seen amazing growth in my faith and seen God move in amazing ways.  I really started to grow in my involvement in 2020 when I went on my first CM spring break Missions trip to Denver, Colorado. The trip was simply amazing. It was the first time I really experienced what it meant to be a part of the body of Christ for a whole week. All we did was serve others and praise God. It was beautiful. After that trip I knew I wanted to lead a life group (small groups).

I went into my first year leading a life group feeling unqualified and unsure but God used me in such amazing ways and blessed me at the same time.  God works through CM life groups in spectacular ways. It is such a good way to build a strong community of believers ready to serve the Lord.  Life groups are also a place of refuge to bring your burdens, worries and guilt to people who are ready to pray for you and come alongside you to support you in the journey with the Lord.

The Life groups at CM are what helped me grow the most in my faith and gave me some of my best friends in the whole world. They are a place where you can find friends and live a life for the Lord amidst a college campus environment that goes in the opposite direction.  Life groups showed me you can have fun in college without doing the typical college things.

Another area that helped me grow in my faith is the staff members of campus ministry.  They all have such an amazing heart for the Lord and I have confided in them many times. Grand Valley is so blessed to have them serving the community. I count many of them as lifelong mentors and I hope to continue to learn and grow from them after college.  The campus ministry staff have loved me and helped me grow in wisdom in amazing ways.

As I come to my last semester of college I would love to see the downtown team reach out to the community more. I think this could look like homeless outreach by trying to provide clothes for the cold months ahead. Another way I think we could serve is by reaching out to other colleges in the area such as Grand Rapids Community College.  I am excited to see house groups continue to grow and provide the community so many students long for.

It has been a blessing being able to be a part of the CM ministry and I hope to continue to
serve in some way after college.
